IRS Moving Mileage

As a member of the Armed Forces, you might be able to claim moving mileage on your tax deductions. In order to be eligible to claim moving mileage, you must observe the following criteria:

  • You must be on active duty
  • Your move is due to a military order and a permanent change of station
  • You weren’t reimbursed for your moving mileage expenses

According to the IRS, a permanent change of station is considered to be:

  • Moving from your home to your first post of active duty
  • Moving from one permanent post to another
  • Moving from your last post of duty to your home or a nearer point in the US

What is the mileage rate for moving expenses?

The IRS has announced the new moving mileage rate, effective January 1, 2026. The rate is 20.5 cents per mile.

Other IRS moving expenses you can deduct

Besides moving mileage, other eligible expenses when moving include storage and traveling expenses to your new home, lodging expenses if applicable, and household and personal goods. Note that you cannot deduct meal expenses.

Just like with moving mileage, you will not be able to deduct any moving-related expenses if you were already reimbursed for them by the government.

Work out the moving mileage and other moving expenses deduction you can claim by using form 3903 supplied by the IRS.
